Literature Club, also known as Lit Club, has been an active club at RHS for a few years now, and it is dedicated to celebrating literature, while also providing opportunities for students to give back to their community.
English teacher Daniela Greenwood serves as advisor and senior co-presidents Joy Trief, Abi Massachi and Arianna Nunez lead the club.
Lit Club initiates activities such as book talks and school-and community-based volunteer opportunities.
Here are some highlights from the club’s most recent events:
Book Talks
Books talks are the core of Lit Club and are a fun and pressure-free way for students to talk with friends about some of their favorite novels.
Lit Club usually hosts three book talks a year during unit lunch. This year, Massachi led the first one on “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” on Thursday, Oct. 30.
The second talk, led by Nunez on Thursday, Jan. 8, featured the classic novel “Little Women.”
Lit Club book talks provide a comfortable and open atmosphere in which everyone’s opinion is heard. The atmosphere of each book talk is laid back, and there is no pressure to contribute to the discussion, which allows members to genuinely enjoy the talk. Students can share thoughts on the novels that they’ve loved the most and inspire other members to read them too.
The tightly knit Lit Club community also serves as a great way to form relationships with others who share an interest in reading.
“The community in the Literature Club is really positive,” Trief said. “Everyone is very friendly and kind.”
Additional Club Activities
Lit Club has partnered with the Randolph Public Library to host Saturday Storytime for children from ages 2 to 5. Club members read stories and assist the children with making crafts that are relevant to the novel being read. Members get to choose the story and prepare a related craft making experience for the children to enjoy. At its first Storytime, Lit Club chose a Halloween theme to complement its timing in October.
“One of our big goals this year is to continue and build our engagement with the Randolph community,” Greenwood said. “We started hosting events at the Randolph Public Library last year and look forward to expanding our service to the library and community.”
Additionally, Lit Club recently partnered with the National English Honor Society and the RISE program at RHS to arrange a winter craft event. This collaborative activity inspired a strong sense of community, which is something Lit Club values.
Upcoming Talks
The next book club talk will be held at RHS on Thursday, April 9 in Room 288 when Trief will lead a discussion on “One of Us Is Lying,” written by Karen M. McManus.
“My favorite part of being a co-president of Lit Club is encouraging a love and appreciation for books,” Trief said. “Literacy and strong reading skills are incredibly important for both academic success and success in any future career or field.”
Lit Club usually meets every other Tuesday, but the schedule can vary depending on other RHS programming. All are welcome to join Lit Club. Simply send a chat to advisor Daniela Greenwood to be added to the club’s Teams page for updates, sign-ups for club activities and more.
