A dozen RHS seniors spent the day building connections, eating, and dancing with 100 local residents at the annual Senior Citizen Prom. History teacher Vincent Verteramo and English teacher Ashley Gregory organized the event, which was held at the Randolph Community Center, on Tuesday, May 5.
“The Randolph Recreation Department hosts Senior Citizen Prom every year in the month of May,” explained Arthi Shri Selvaraj, the Parks and Recreation service coordinator. “Randolph senior citizens and RHS seniors have an opportunity to meet people while enjoying lunch buffet and DJ. This year we had over 100 seniors and 12 RHS seniors attending.”
The day began around 11 a.m. when the high school students boarded a bus, arriving at the Community Center at 11:30 a.m. Inside, the room was set with approximately 11 tables, each with one open seat reserved for an RHS student to socialize with prom attendees.
“The event went extremely well,” Verteramo said. “Both our RHS seniors and seniors from the Randolph community enjoyed themselves very much. Everyone mingled, ate, danced and shared some laughs.”
“The highlight in my eyes is that everyone of all ages has fun now,” Verteramo said. “Age seemed to disappear, and genuine memories were made.”
More than just a celebration, the event also served as an opportunity for the younger generation to learn valuable life lessons and the older generation to reconnect with teens.
The fun began on the dance floor, which stayed packed throughout the event, and the D.J. kept things lively, playing a mix of music that brought everyone together.
“I had a lot of fun taking and dancing with so many people, it was a great break from the school day and was very uplifting,” RHS senior Alex Torterelli said.
The dance floor became a learning opportunity for young and old alike. A few senior citizens took the opportunity to teach students how to line dance, and the students shared some popular dances and today’s trends.
As the afternoon ended, it was time for the long-awaited tradition of crowning the prom king and queen, chosen by the RHS seniors from three nominated couples, whose dancing and positive energy had infused the room.
Once the King and Queen were crowned, all attendees gathered on the dance floor and broke into applause as the fun and unforgettable day came to a heartfelt close.
