The Randolph Sprint Team was the backbone of the Track and Field program this season, contributing a large share of the team’s points through individual races, relay events and hurdles competitions.
“Hurdling is more than just an event for me,” senior Juliana Kusnier said. “It’s where I feel the most like myself. It doesn’t feel like work at all.”
The Girls Sprint events included the 100-meter, 200-meter and 400-meter races, along with the 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles.
Seniors Gabby Ball, Jillian Leibhauser and Seannah Parsons led the team in the 100-meter race, while Leibhauser and Parsons also excelled in the 200-meter event.
Junior Carly Renna and seniors Lilah Willis and Leibhauser were strong in the 400-meter race. Sophomore Ava Gumann and Kusnier competed well in the 100-meter hurdles, while junior Juliana Young and senior Katelyn Perren ran the 400-meter hurdles.
“Hurdling is an event that takes a lot of practice to really unlock an athlete’s full potential,” sophomore Ava Gumann said.
Among the team’s top performances this season, Ball placed fifth at the Morris County Relay Championships on April 29 with a time of 1:07.99. Leibhauser placed 17th in the 100 meters at NJAC East on May 5. Kusnier, senior Madyson Galloza and sophomores Reese Nelson and Corine Denizard also earned third place in the 4×100-meter relay at the Randolph Relays on April 25 with a time of 1:59.89.
“Being a sprinter on the Randolph track team is a very big part of my life that I take a lot of pride in,” Denizard said.
The Boys Sprint team competed in the same events, including the 100-meter, 200-meter and 400-meter races, along with the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles.
Sophomores Ian Yorks and Jordan Dixon were the team’s top 100-meter runners. Yorks recorded the fastest 100-meter time on the team this season with an 11.53 at NJAC East. Yorks and Dixon also led the team in the 200 meters, with Dixon posting a 24.04 at the Frosh-Soph Relays.
In the 400 meters, juniors Russell Goldstein, Julian Hernandez and Felipe Pesa, along with senior captain Christian Velasco, paced the team. Velasco ran a season highlight of 52.94 in the 400 meters at NJAC East.
Senior Asher Adege and sophomore Manav Patel competed in the 110-meter hurdles. Patel recorded a personal best of 17.86 at NJAC East. Adege, Hernandez and Patel also competed in the 400-meter hurdles, where Hernandez posted a personal best of 1:02.67.
Both sprint teams dedicated significant time and effort to training and competition throughout the season. While many of the girls team’s top sprinters will graduate soon, the future remains bright thanks to a talented group of underclassmen who continue to develop and prepare for larger roles in the coming years.
