RHS held its annual Spring Band concert on May 19, featuring performances by the Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble.
As the final performance of the school year, the concert marked the culmination of months of preparation for student musicians and served as a farewell to the graduating seniors.
“The spring concert is when we can see the work we put in,” freshman Sam Herring said. “Seeing all the people in the audience enjoying the music is really satisfying.”
Directed by Michael Lichtenfeld, the Symphonic Band opened the evening with selections including “Highlights from ‘La La Land’,” a jazz-inspired arrangement from the Academy Award-winning film. The ensemble also performed “Halo 3” and concluded its set with “America the Beautiful” in recognition of the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary.
“I really enjoyed “La La Land” because it emphasized our band’s strengths,” sophomore Josh Rondon said.
Between performances, seniors recognized Lichtenfeld for his leadership and contributions to the band program, presenting him with gifts and flowers.
Directed by Nicholas Fantazzi, The Wind Ensemble followed with four selections: “Dedicatory Overture,” “Poem for Band,” “Strange Humors” and “The Washington Post March” by John Philip Sousa. The final piece featured guest conductor Matthew Paterno, a director and clinician who worked with the ensemble throughout the year.
Seniors also honored Fantazzi with speeches and gifts in recognition of his work with the program.
The concert concluded with a combined performance by both ensembles of “Byzantine Dances,” a work inspired by traditional Middle Eastern musical styles. The piece was originally selected for the band’s biennial trip to Boston, where students participated in clinician-led rehearsals, sightseeing activities and performances by collegiate ensembles.
The evening also included the presentation of senior scholarships and awards. The RHS Band Parents Association awarded general scholarships to seniors Richard Torrente, Jane Doran, Emma Brunton and Kaitlin Ford.
In addition, the Matthew Augustine Memorial Scholarship, established by the Augustine family in honor of their late son and RHS student Matthew Augustine, was awarded to seniors Richard Torrente, Angus Costello and Tyler Davis. Recipients were selected based on their leadership, service to the band program and scholarship essays. Their names will be added to a plaque displayed between the band and choir rooms.
