The National Social Studies Honors Society (NSSHS) will host its “Red, White, & Jersey” historical showcase this March, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States while highlighting the pivotal role that New Jersey, especially Morris County, has played in shaping the nation’s history.
The two-day event will feature a community open house on Wednesday, March 4, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., followed by a second, full-day student open house on Thursday, March 5.
RHS senior and NSSHS president Liam Rose explained that the showcase will spotlight various historical sites throughout New Jersey, with special emphasis on local landmarks in Morris County. Each site will be represented by a student-created exhibit, where presenters will share the site’s historical significance and its connection to state and national history.
“From being the heart of the American Revolution to holding sacred grounds and fostering many American icons, this country would not be what it is today without the inclusion of our great state of New Jersey,” Rose said.
NSSHS advisor and history teacher Jennifer Corley acknowledged the scope of the project “We knew it was going to be a big undertaking,” she said. “I think maybe we underestimated how big it would be and how big it would become, but this is going to be fantastic.”
Rose has taken on a multifaceted leadership role in the planning process, helping design the event layout while also ensuring students stay on track with projects that have been months in the making.
“My partner and I have been working since around December to add details and information to our project,” RHS senior presenter Alivia Wright said. “It’s going to be satisfying when it’s all done.”
Added Corley, “What we’re seeing has already exceeded our expectations.”
Beyond creating polished projects, students aim to become subject-matter experts and share their knowledge with the broader community.
“I’m excited for the community members and families to appreciate what we’ve put together and what our members spent a lot of time on,” Corley said.
