RMS eighth graders crossed the parking lot to RHS on Monday, Feb. 2, for an inside look at high school life. Guided by seniors in the Tomorrow’s Leaders program, the middle school students toured the building, asked questions and explored the many opportunities at RHS awaiting them next year.
The visit began with a multi-part presentation in the high school auditorium. Eighth graders enjoyed performances by the RHS Marching Band and members of the dance program, followed by presentations from students, teachers and administrators.
“I am looking forward to the swim season in high school the most, but I also enjoy theater, so I liked the VPA performances,” eighth grader Brogan Donnelly said. “I’m not a very good dancer though, so I don’t think I will be joining dance.”
Members of the guidance department introduced the eighth graders to high school policies, including attendance, class requirements and the four-day rotation schedule. Presenters also discussed the multitude of clubs and activities, urging students to get involved as a great way to make friends outside of their grade level.
“For high school, I was excited to see all the different clubs and decide which ones I want to join,” eighth grader Bella Norton said. “I am also looking forward to joining one of the orchestras.”
Current RHS students also shared personal reflections on their experiences in clubs and activities, some of which they first learned about on their own tours as eighth graders.
Junior Julie Dennison expressed the love she has for the RHS dance team, stating that the program “means so much” to her and that she hopes the incoming freshman “feel inspired to join the program.”
“I’ve met some of my best friends through the Marching Band program,” junior trumpet player Julia Vitale noted. “I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities that this program has given me, both academically and socially.”
Above all, eighth graders left with the understanding that high school is not something to fear, but a place to grow, explore new interests and find a community at RHS.
