The New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks will face off on Sunday, Feb. 8, at 6:30 p.m. in Super Bowl LX at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
The Super Bowl is the biggest sporting event in the United States each year and one of the most popular worldwide. It serves as the dramatic conclusion to the NFL season, crowning the league’s best team.
How did both teams reach the big game?
Both the Patriots and Seahawks endured a tough season filled with strong opposition.
The Patriots opened the playoffs with a 16-3 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers in the first round. Seattle, the No. 1 seed in the NFC, earned a first-round bye after finishing the regular season with a 14-3 record. New England also finished 14-3.
In the divisional round, the Seahawks dominated the San Francisco 49ers 41-6, while the Patriots defeated the Houston Texans 28-16. Seattle advanced to the Super Bowl with a 31-27 win over the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC championship game. The Patriots clinched their spot by edging the Denver Broncos 10-7 in a snow-filled AFC Championship Game.
Key matchups to watch
This year, a few key matchups will help determine the outcome of the Super Bowl.
One of the most anticipated battles will be between Seahawks wide receiver Jaxson Smith-Njigba and Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez. Both players have been dominant this season, and their matchup could play a major role in shifting momentum.
Turnovers may also be a deciding factor. Patriots quarterback Drake Maye and Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold have both struggled with ball security at times this season. Limiting mistakes and capitalizing on opponents’ errors will be crucial.
“I think the biggest key to the game is Sam Darnold limiting turnovers and making the right decisions,” freshman Seahawks fan Zach McDaniel said.
What’s on the line?
For the Patriots, this marks their first Super Bowl appearance since the Tom Brady–Bill Belichick era. A victory would also give New England a record-breaking seventh Super Bowl title. For the Seahawks, the game offers a chance at redemption after their Super Bowl loss to the Patriots more than a decade ago, as well as an opportunity to earn their second championship.
Potential game-changers
Seattle running back Kenneth Walker has been a major force throughout the season and will look to make an impact on the ground. On the other side, the Patriots’ defensive line — featuring players such as Christian Barmore and Milton Williams — will aim to pressure the Seahawks’ offensive line and disrupt the passing game.
The Super Bowl halftime show will be headlined by rapper Bad Bunny, making history as the first Latin artist to solo headline the performance. He is expected to perform songs from his Grammy Award–winning album, Debí Tirar Más Fotos.
“I think it’s going to be cool seeing a Latino perform at halftime,” freshman Casey Lozier said. “I think he’s going to show his talent and make the atmosphere really lively.”
Final outlook
Predicting a winner has been difficult, as both teams have matched each other throughout the season. However, many NFL fans are giving edge to Seattle.
“I believe Seattle will win because I don’t think the Patriots defense can stop the Seahawks offense,” RHS junior Anthony Helmstetter said.
Seattle’s offense has been dominant both through the air and on the ground, while its defense has helped carry the team to the Super Bowl. New England will need its strongest performance in the postseason to slow the Seahawks.
Once the Super Bowl concludes, football fans will face a break of more than two months before the next major NFL event, the league draft, scheduled for April 23–25, shortly after the start of free agency.
