It was a thrilling season for Randolph Girls Soccer, marked by dominant wins and an unexpected defeat in the county tournament. After three tremendous victories against West Morris Central, Montville and Villa Walsh, the Rams suffered a disappointing loss to Chatham in the Morris County Final (MCT).
Randolph bounced back by beating Morris Knolls 5-1 on Oct. 27 and getting revenge against Chatham 5-0 on Oct. 29, along with a deep run in the state tournament.
Here’s a look at more season highlights.
Randolph routs Villa Walsh 6-0 on Tuesday, Oct. 7
As the No. 2 seed, Randolph got a bye in the first round and started its campaign in the second, hosting No. 18 Villa Walsh.
Randolph came out hot with sophomore Macie Wysocki finding the net early. The Rams followed it up with five more goals from junior co-captain Amiyah Soto, senior Pia DiGregorio, freshman Elyse Karol, sophomore Dana Cozza and one more from M. Wysocki.
“It was an amazing feeling to come up big for the team,” M. Wysocki said. “I also think it gave us the push we needed to start the game.”
Randolph defeats Montville 3-2 on Tuesday, Oct. 14
Randolph’s next faced No. 7 Montville at home. This game was a closer matchup, and it took some time for Randolph to break the Montville defense.
Senior Reina Daniel was able to put two in past the Montville keeper. Montville responded with a goal, but Cozza put the icing on the cake, scoring a third goal for Randolph. The Mustangs got one more back, but it was too little too late.
“I knew another goal would guarantee a win,” Cozza said. “I wanted that for the team, so I did everything I could to make it happen.”
The Rams blow past West Morris Central 2-0 on Saturday, Oct. 18
Randolph advanced to the MTC finals after defeating West Morris Central in the semifinals in Montville.
Randolph was the first team to score, 10 minutes into the second half of counties. Randolph came out strong as junior Carly Renna assisted Karol to the team’s first goal, making the score 1-0 Randolph. Two minutes later, Daniel scored another goal, giving Randolph a comfortable 2-0 lead for the rest of the game.
West Morris Central continued to fight hard, as did Randolph, but the Rams defense stood strong, earning Randolph another victory, 2-0.
“I think we are all very excited for the game,” senior co-captain Carlie Wysocki said prior to the MTC finals. “Winning counties would be a huge accomplishment and a very big win to bring into the start of states. So, I’m hoping that moving onto finals will lead us to more future wins.”
County finals see Randolph fall to Chatham on Saturday, Oct. 25
Randolph was up against No. 5 Chatham, who has won the tournament for the past four years, at Roxbury High School. The game was super tight to start, with both teams trading blows. Freshman goalkeeper Evelyn Hendrickson was forced to make some big saves.
“It felt exciting to have the opportunity to play for a county final,” C. Wysocki said. “Even when the game wasn’t going our way, we tried to keep our effort high.”
Toward the end of the half, Chatham found its breakthrough and took the lead. Despite Randolph having possession for the majority of the second half, Chatham was able to capitalize on a breakthrough, giving the team a two-goal lead.
Chatham ended the game with a penalty kick and a 3-0 win, leaving Randolph heartbroken.
State sectional semifinal heartbreak: Rams come up short against Morris Knolls on Wednesday, Nov. 12
The team had a long run through the state tournament, beating Fort Lee. However, the Rams fell short in the final minutes to Morris Knolls, losing 2-1 at home in the state sectional semifinals.
C. Wysocki opened the scoring with a top-corner strike, and Randolph’s defense held strong until late into the second half. Morris Knolls capitalized on Randolph injuries, netting two goals in the last 10 minutes. “The injuries swung the momentum of the game, and Knolls was just able to capitalize off of it,” fan Jackson Magley said.
