Randolph students competed against Randolph Township police officers in an intense but friendly volleyball match, with each team taking one game, on Wednesday, Dec. 21, in the high school auditorium.

The lunchtime game was the centerpiece of the high school’s winter Spirit Week. As fellow Randolph students cheered them on, the teams battled it out in two squeaker games, with each side taking one win by the end of the match.

In the first game, the Randolph students came close to winning, but the cops pulled ahead by the end, stealing the game by two points, 27 to 25.

“The first game was a hard-fought battle,” junior player Ethan Gorman said. “I thought the team and I could have performed better; we got sloppy near the end.”

“We had the lead for most of the game, but we got too cocky, and the police officers were able to win,” said junior Carter Kielbania, who also competed in the match.

Frustrated with their first game performance, the Randolph students were determined to step it up in the second game. Kielbania noted that it helped when their team received an intense pep talk from student coach Cam Johnson beforehand.

The second game was close from start to finish, but the students ultimately became victorious, winning 23 to 21.

“It was nice to get some revenge against the cops,” Kielbania said. “The whole team was ecstatic.”

“I was happy to get a great team win,” Gorman agreed. “The crowd was cheering when we beat the cops. Many students were cheering us on during the games.”

Rayna Soto, a Randolph student who watched the game, was one of them. “It was a super entertaining event to watch,” Soto said. “Both teams were very competitive. The crowd was very into the game, and we were happy to see the Randolph students win.”

“Overall, I had a great experience playing the cops,” player Gorman said. “They were all very friendly, and we all shook hands at the end of the match.”

“It was a fun experience, and I enjoyed playing two close volleyball games with my friends,” Kielbania added. “I would love to do this again next year.”
