The 12th annual Global Café brought food, music and performances to RHS on Friday, April 24, celebrating cultures from around the world and fostering appreciation for diversity within the school community.
The café has been hosted for over 12 years by the French and Spanish honor societies, Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) club and Team Harmony. The event was held in the high school Commons and open to all members of the RHS community.
“My favorite part about participating is being able to see all the different cultures and being immersed in them,” junior and AAPI public relations officer Stephanie Weng said. “I feel like I am gaining insight into different cultures, and I really like being able to hang out with my friends and eat unique food.”
Several local restaurants donated food to the event, including Forte, Kabab Paradise, Bally Dar, Aroma Market and Tropical Smoothie Café. Attendees sampled dished like empanadas, samosas, rice and beans and pasta throughout the evening.
“My favorite part about the Global Café is helping to organize it, and participating is also very fun,” senior and French Honor Society secretary Saahithi Jatamoni said. “There are so many different cultures involved and a variety of things to try out. It’s great to gather with everyone as a community and get to know a lot of new people.”
In addition to food, the event featured performances ranging from singing and dancing to skits and cultural Kahoot games. Colorful decorations filled the Commons as students showcased traditions from around the world.
Club members agreed the Global Café benefits all who attend. “The reason we like to participate is to bring culture awareness to other people about the different foods, lifestyles, dances and ways of living in of a lot of Asian cultures,” AAPI advisor Evan Wilson said.
The event allowed students and parents to try new foods, learn cultural dances and celebrate the diversity within the RHS community.
