The Randolph Boys Swim team may have finished the season with a 0-7 meet record, but the numbers don’t tell the full story.
With just seven swimmers on the roster, the Rams fought to the end. However, in a sport where having more swimmers means racking up more points, Randolph simply didn’t have the manpower to outscore larger teams.
Still the team consistently delivered impressive individual performances. “We won most of our races this season, but we did not have the manpower to win the meets,” junior Gabe Diaz said.
During the season, the team came close to victories against Mountain Lakes (94-71) and Morris Hills (77-69). Even in tougher matchups against Roxbury (101-65) and Delbarton (116-51), Randolph athletes continued to post strong individual finishes.
Notable swimmers from the season include juniors Gavin Drazek and TJ Wangchuk. Drazek won first place at the Knolls meet with a time of 1:00.4 in the 100 backstroke. Wangchuck took first place at Morristown with a time of 1:01.64 in the 100 butterfly.
Other notable wins included senior Marco Holder earning first place finishes at Morristown in two events: the 100 breaststroke with a time of 107.40 and the 200 IM against Mountain Lakes with a time of 2:19.85.
Looking ahead, the team plans to train hard and recruit new swimmers to strengthen next year’s roster.
“My hope is that our existing seniors can be replaced with new incoming freshman that are ready to carry their weight,” Drazek said.
Added Wangchuk, “I saw a lot of growth this year and I am excited for my senior year.”
For now, these unsinkable Rams deserve to be recognized for the determination and hard work it took them to get through a tough season.
