The Randolph Boys Basketball team is making an impact beyond the scoreboard, stepping up to support the local community through its annual winter coat drive.
The team organized and led the drive from Dec. 18 through Jan. 9, collecting gently used winter coats for individuals and families in need during the cold winter months. Players promoted the effort by posting on the team’s Instagram account and making announcements at home games, helping spread awareness throughout the school and wider community.
“Our program has done the coat drive for a few years now,” head coach Nicholas Lavender said. “It’s a great way for the program to reach out to the community to help families in need of warmth for the winter. It’s something that’s meaningful to our guys and something they look forward to each year.”
As donations increased, collection bins were placed throughout the building to make participation easy for students, staff and families. At the conclusion of the drive, team members worked together to gather the filled bins from across the school and load the coats into vehicles for delivery.
All donated coats were given to Jersey Cares, a nonprofit volunteer organization that connects individuals and groups with service opportunities aimed at strengthening communities across New Jersey. The organization helps distribute donated items to people and families who need them most.
“It felt meaningful to give back and know the coats would go to people who truly need them,” senior Luke Denigris said.
By working together off the court, the team hopes to show that success is measured not only by wins and losses, but also by the positive impact made in the lives of others.
