With a midseason record of 5-7 marked by a roller coaster stretch of wins and losses, the Girls Basketball team is showing signs of strength heading into the second half of the season. The Rams recently earned two key victories—highlighted by a thrilling 24-23 win over Montclair Kimberly—signaling growth and resilience as the season progresses.
Led by senior captains Kayla Takacs and Jayla Rose, the team has outlined its strategy for success in upcoming games. “Our goal is to stay focused under pressure and maintain a positive team attitude to help us bounce back quickly after mistakes, and hustle on every possession” Rose said.
Added Takacs, “We have adapted as a team. We are constantly growing and evolving as one. With each practice, we are striving to get better.”
Here are some highlights—and challenges—from the first half of the 2025-2026 season.
Dec. 16-Dec. 27: Rams Have an Up-and-Down Start
After a season-opening loss to Chatham 49-29 on Tuesday, Dec. 16, the girls enjoyed back-to-back victories. They defeated Montville 45-31, on Friday, Dec. 19 and Bloomfield 40-16 on Monday, Dec. 22.
Key contributors to the Montville defeat included top-scoring freshman Jayda Lambo, and seniors Maddie Gaynor and Rose, both with 10 points. Sophomore Ali Boscarino was the top scorer against Bloomfield, with 13 points.
The Rams ended the week with a loss to North Hunterdon 42-27 on Saturday, Dec. 27.
Dec. 29-Jan. 13: Rams Strive to Get Back on Track
The team ended 2025 with a 44-30 win against South Brunswick. Standout players included Boscarino with 18 points and Gaynor with eight rebounds.
The Rams then fell into a disappointing five-game losing streak, which they faced with determination and a renewed focus on improvement.
“After a tough loss, we consider what we need to work on, then leave the frustration in the past, transforming it into motivation for the next practice,” Takacs said.
Jan. 16-Jan. 20: Rams Bounce Back
The Rams are now on a two-game winning streak after defeating both Warren Hills 47-32 and Montclair Kimberley 24-23. Standout players included Boscarino, with 17 combined points, and J. Lambo, with 16 combined points. Other notable players included Takacs, freshman Mya Lambo, Gaynor and Rose.
On Friday, Jan. 16, the Rams’ win over Warren Hills 47-32 coincided with National Girls and Women in Sports Day, making it a fitting celebration of girls’ sports at RHS.
Most recently, the Rams defeated Montclair Kimberly 24-23, on Tuesday, Jan. 20, which was also Teacher Appreciation Day at RHS. It was a special day for seniors Takacs, Rose, Gaynor and Reina Daniel, who each honored a teacher of their choice in a pre-game ceremony.
The Rams will face Morristown next on Friday, Jan. 23 at 7 p.m.
