In just her first year on the varsity Field Hockey team, freshman goalie Mia Briganti tallied her 100th save against Mendham on Wednesday, Oct. 8. As one of only four freshmen on varsity, Briganti has emerged as a key contributor to the team’s success this season, earning the respect of teammates, coaches and opponents alike.
“Being a main contributor as a freshman on varsity means a lot,” Briganti said. “You’re just not playing; you are making a real impact. It is about stepping up and showing everyone what you’ve got, even if you are new. This is a huge deal because it means the coaches trust you and your teammates rely on you. It’s a chance to prove yourself and help the team succeed.”
Following the graduation of the Class of 2025, Randolph Field Hockey faced a major gap at the goalie position. Despite competing with more experienced upperclassmen, Briganti secured the starting varsity role. Her athleticism and quick reflexes have kept the team competitive through a demanding schedule. Coaches and teammates consistently praise her work ethic and leadership, both on and off the field.
“Mia comes to practice every day with the intent to get better,” said Rich Salmon, the team’s newly minted head coach. “She has grown so much during the season because of her work ethic, ability to be coached and competitiveness. She is fearless in the cage.”
Since achieving her 100-saves milestone, Briganti’s tally has continued to rise exponentially. She helped stun Whippany Park in the first round of the Morris County Tournament, allowing just one goal. She also made an additional 27 saves in the next three games against Chatham, Wallkill Valley and Mountain Lakes, bringing her total to 139 saves for the season.
“We were lucky enough to have Mia step into the role of goalie as a freshman,” senior captain Jillian Liebhauser said. “The position can be really hard, mentally and physically demanding, but she has handled it very well with her competitiveness and ability to adapt.”
