The RHS Girls Volleyball team destroyed Pope John 2-0, on Monday, Sept. 22, bringing their season record to 7-0.
Randolph proved to be dominating within minutes of the first set, with back-to-back kills by sophomore Reese Nelson and senior Regan Galloway, leading the Rams to win the first set with a 13-point lead.
“As a team I think we are doing very well,” junior co-captain Klara Hindson said. “We are definitely improving every day.”
Randolph’s defense saved the team from a few points by the opposing team with blocks by Galloway and Hindson.
Randolph’s momentum carried into the second set, but after Randolph took an early lead, Pope John pulled ahead 8-5 before the Rams tied it up 9-9 with a kill from junior Veronika Covalesky. Hindson followed with another kill to give Randolph its first lead of the set at 10-9.
“From the beginning of the season our team goal has been to go into every game with a positive mindset and obviously to get on the banner,” Covalesky said.
The second set became a back-and-forth battle, highlighted by aces from junior Aleksandra Jankowska and strong kills from Nelson, sophomore Maria Fuentes, Hindson and senior co-captain Ashley Silvestri. With a block by Jankowska, diving save from senior Jazmine Holder, and a kill by Fuentes, the Rams were up 19-16.
“As a team, I hope we can improve our consistency in our game play, whether we are home or away,” Holder said
Pope John fought back to make it 21-19, but the Rams fought back harder with the help of consistent communication and teamwork. Nelson powered down a kill, bringing the game to match point, and Covalesky finished the night with one final kill to secure the 25-20 victory.
Girls Volleyball faces West Morris next at home on Friday, Sept. 26, for Senior Night.
