As the last day of school nears, RHS students are happily planning their summer break. From touring colleges and universities, to visiting exotic locations, to preparing for fall sports, the summer is a time for all to relax and enjoy their time off from school.
For seniors, this summer marks the end of their high school chapter and the start of a new one. Many of them said they’ll spend the summer working and preparing for their departure to college. Before senior Ryan Schorr starts his summer job, however, he’ll be competing in a national Speech & Debate Tournament in Iowa.
“This summer I will be attending Nationals for Speech & Debate,” Schorr said. “Afterwards, I’ll be working prior to my departure to college.”
For juniors, summer acts as a welcome break from the immense pressure they faced during the school year. Despite this, many juniors said they’d be using their free time during the summer to be productive. Some will continue touring colleges and universities. Others said they’ll focus on their fitness. “During the summer I will be home most days, so I’m going to wake up early and go for runs,” junior Marco Holder said.
Many sophomores said they’ll be getting ready to apply to college by studying for SATs and ACTs. However, summer isn’t only about standardized test prep for this class of students. Sophomore Klara Hindson, who plays for a national volleyball team, will be spending most of her summer traveling around the country to compete in tournaments. “I am looking forward to going to Florida and Texas for volleyball, and I’m excited to vacation in Europe with my family,” Hindson said.
Finally, after wrapping up their first year of high school, freshmen said they’re looking forward to traveling with their friends and families. Some of them, on the other hand, will be staying close to home doing summer work or getting ready for upcoming fall sports. “I’m looking forward to waking up late, going to the beach and hanging out with friends and family,” freshman Karishma Dhawan said. “I know that some of my friends are playing lacrosse and soccer.”
Whether staying close to home or traveling far away, RHS students agreed they’re looking forward to a sun-filled, relaxing summer.
