Members of the Spanish and French Honor Societies joined forces with Team Harmony to host their annual Global Café in the high school Commons on Friday, May 2. At the event, which was open to all members of the RHS community, attendees enjoyed international food and music and conversed about their various cultures.
“It was actually launched by the senior students because they felt that the school needed this celebration of cultures,” said Sybil Sanchez-Jacome, the Spanish Honor Society advisor. “It started a decade ago when I came to Randolph High School.”
When asked what their favorite part of attending the Global Café was, students replied that they loved embracing their own cultures and experiencing those of others. “The best part about global cafe was the diversity of all the food,” said junior attendee Reina Daniel, a member of the French Honor Society. “I really enjoyed the feeling of being immersed in so many different cultures.”
This year’s event was a huge hit with the students and encouraged everyone to cherish their culture and experience how others embrace theirs as well.
“I think the best part about the Global Cafe is seeing everyone come together to collaboratively share the different cultures,” said RHS senior attendee Leah Davies.
“I think the best part about the Global Café is getting to bring food and contribute to the night of everyone working together,” said senior Sebastion Henao, who attended on behalf of the Spanish Honor Society. Henao added that being able to help the café come together was a large part of what made this event so wonderful for him.
The Global Café represented a lot more than just food to those in attendance. “It is a celebration of the diversity of our school,” Sanchez-Jacome said.
Toward the end of the festive evening, members of Team Harmony performed songs from different cultures to help all students feel seen and valued. An ongoing talent show also gave everyone the opportunity to dance, sing and play cultural instruments throughout the evening.
The event was full of diversity and empowerment and continued a meaningful RHS tradition that brings all cultures together to celebrate and enjoy a plethora of good food.
