Twelve RHS senior hosted the third annual Senior Citizen Prom for local senior citizens at the Randolph Recreational Center on Tuesday, May 6.
The event featured music from DJ Gio, the crowning of a senior citizen prom king and queen and a catered lunch from A&B Bagels of Randolph. The student volunteers mingled with the senior citizens, with one high schooler seated at each table of six to eight senior attendees. The setup allowed for great conversation and helped participants get to know one another.
“Having the high school seniors join the senior seniors makes this prom even more pleasant,” said George Chang, one of the senior citizens at the event.
DJ Gio played songs from different decades that both groups of seniors enjoyed, allowing them to bust a move on the dance floor. Attendees sang their hearts out as they danced, allowing for quality bonding time while on the floor.
“We love having the high schoolers come and dance with us,” said Rose Gangemi, another senior citizen. “They are so kind, and it makes us feel very young again, and we love that [they] come every year.”
The students and senior citizens taught each other different variations of line dances. Students led a dance to “Wobble” by V.I.C., and the seniors led a line dance to “Wagon Wheel” by the Old Crow Medicine Show. Everyone enjoyed the music and connected over a shared love of dancing.
“My favorite part of the event was the dancing,” RHS senior and participant Shelsyn Vasquez Alvarez said. “I felt like everyone was very included, and everyone was having fun.”
The day closed with senior citizens Giuseppe and Ninetta Esposito being crowned prom king and queen, allowing for a perfect ending to a wonderful day.
“I love how Randolph does this every year, it is something different that is very fun,” Alvarez says.
