RHS faculty and staff had the opportunity to bring their children to the high school on Bring Your Child to Work Day on Thursday, April 24.
The tiny visitors interacted with high schoolers and participated in several activities organized by the members of the Future Educators of America club, led by RHS history teacher Ashley Kanya.
“Kanya did a really nice job and had a lot of fun things to do today,” noted Jennifer Huey, the college and career counselor at the high school.
Activities included coloring with sidewalk chalk, blowing bubbles and playing sports-related games. Some of the more unique programming included visiting the animals in the “zoo,” aka Room 121, where animal studies is taught. Another fan favorite was the improvised interviews that the kids did in the TV studio.
“I really liked it. I got to pretend I was doing a podcast in the video area,” said Madison Kanya, 12, the daughter of Ashley Kanya. “We got to see the animals and stuff like that. It was really fun.”
The day gave the older kids an opportunity to not only to enjoy themselves, but also see what it’s like at other high schools. “It was great to see another school that I’ve never been to before and how different it is,” said visiting high schooler Alicia Bielen, the daughter of Media Teacher Casmir Bielen. “I only saw the Media Center, and it’s really advanced. When I took video film last year, we didn’t have as much of the high-tech equipment.”
The teachers who brought their kids into school enjoyed spending the day with them, although it may have been tiring, especially for those with young ones to manage. “It was super fun but exhausting,” agreed Gina Adickes, who teaches phys. ed. at RHS.
Despite some kid-generated chaos, the experience seemed enjoyable for all involved. Parents said they were happy to introduce their children to that mysterious workplace they venture to each day. The day was definitely a highlight of the year for RHS staffers’ children as well as the staff members themselves.
