The RHS Wind Ensemble was among the 12 bands that performed at the by-invitation-only New Jersey State Gala, held at TCNJ on Sunday, April 27. The concert celebrated the top high school bands in the north, central and south regions of New Jersey in a noncompetitive showcase.
The Wind Ensemble’s invitation came from their placement at the Region Concert Band Festival in March, where they received a gold rating and score of 94. The band had a quick five-week turnaround to learn new music in preparation for the gala.
“This is the 21st time the Randolph HS Wind Ensemble has been chosen to attend the gala since 1998,” director Nicholas Fantazzi said. “This is the most appearances by any band in North Jersey.”
The Wind Ensemble first presented “Satiric Dances,” a three-movement suite composed by Norman Dello Joio. The contrast between vibrance and dissonance shown throughout this piece created a unique listening experience. While the shorter woodwind moments allowed for solos, the full ensemble sound brought the “comedy” theme to life, creating a refreshing atmosphere on stage.
“It was a lot different from most of pieces we play and had a good combination of melodic and exciting sections,” senior clarinetist Riley Brown said.
“Rephrygeration” by Todd Stalter acted as the Wind Ensemble’s closer. A powerful yet energetic low brass section introduced the melody of the piece, as the woodwinds were integrated throughout. This piece placed emphasis on accents and staccatos, bringing thunderous applause for the conclusion of the gala.
“I liked all the fast and interesting rhythms that make the piece unique,” sophomore alto saxophonist Everett Palumbo said.
A brief acknowledgment and an award ceremony followed the performance as each band received a trophy in honor of their accomplishments that led them to this stage.
“It is an honor to be invited to this prestigious event and has a lot to do with the hard work our students put in each year,” Fantazzi said. “We are so proud of our students!”
The Wind Ensemble will give its final performance of the year at the RHS Spring Concert on Tuesday, May 20, at 7 p.m. in the auditorium.
