Girls Ice Hockey played with dominance and secured a 10-2 victory over Newark East Side at Aspen Arena on Jan 29. This was followed by a 3-1 loss @ Madison, bringing the season record to 3-9-1.
At the Newark East Side game, the Rams came out strong and the opposing goalie was not ready for the barrage of shots, testing her from all angles. Despite this, the Rams could not find the back of the net early on in the matchup.
Newark East Side did not hold down and challenged the Rams to the puck. Newark East Side then put two in the back of the net early in the period. The Rams immediately reacted to this, and freshman Charna Torres put two goals onto the score board, tying the game 2-2.
The second period remained locked at 2-2, with both teams battling for control until Torres took the puck down the ice and shot it at the top corner, putting another point on the board. She buried the puck two more times, giving her team the edge and shifting the momentum in their favor, with the period ending 5-2.
“It was a really fun game, the whole team working together and communicating helped us score more goals,” Torres said.
The last period kicked off with the Rams coming out strong, putting in relentless effort on both ends of the ice. They fought for every puck, pressed hard and contained opponents on defense. Junior Amelia Kolbik received a long pass from Torres and managed to get it past the goalie. Senior Caroline Coe, a defender, saw an opportunity and skated up with confidence through the Newark East Side defenders, faking out the goalie with a quick move before sliding it into the net.
Defenders Lia Carroll, Caroline Coe, Lily Zepp, Brooke Roddell, Jillian Gizienski, Cam Browning, and Jessa Altemose were able to shut down all offensive threats and maintained tight coverage throughout the period.
“I think we were great on our fore check, defensive zone coverage and our power plays,” Coach Scott Aiello said.
Junior Bowie Manning got her first varsity goal, tapping it right into the net, adding to the excitement and confidence the Rams felt during the last period of the game.
The clock was running down, but the Rams were not done filling up the score board. Kolbik passed the puck across the ice to senior Liv Olechowski, who brought another goal through and extended the Rams lead to 9-2. Carrol also energized the crowd by taking it up herself and pushing the score to a commanding 10-2, sealing the Rams victory.
The final buzzer sounded, and the game closed with a 10-2 win, as the team members celebrated their strong efforts from start to finish.
“We knew this was a game we needed to win, and everyone put 100% into it,” Coe said.
The Rams play @ Chatham next, on Saturday, Feb. 14.
