From Jan. 8-30, the Rams faced a difficult three-week stretch during which the team went 2-7. However, the team also experienced two major wins during this time period, to Morris Hills and Morris Knolls, giving the Rams hope and determination for the rest of the season.
This spirit helped served the team well in the Morris County Tournament (MTC), Preliminary Round, when the Rams routed Parsippany Hills 54-44, paving the way for a strong remainder to the season.
Here’s a recap of some key games from January.
Jan. 22, Jan. 24: Rams vs. Sparta, Chatham
On Jan. 22, the Randolph Rams hosted conference opponent Chatham but fell short in a challenging matchup. The Rams started strong, fueled by junior Ryan Warner’s sharp shooting from beyond the arc, and ended the first quarter tied 11-11 after successfully breaking Chatham’s full-court press.
In the second quarter, the Rams built a lead early, firing on all cylinders. However, the Cougars surged in the final minutes of the half, forcing costly turnovers and converting them into points to take a 35-24 lead into halftime.
Chatham carried its momentum into the third quarter, dominating with a 16-4 run. While the Rams fought hard, they couldn’t close the gap, ultimately losing 67-42.
The Rams suffered another tough loss to Sparta on Jan. 24, falling 64-48 despite valiant efforts.
Jan. 8, Jan. 16: Rams vs. Morris Hills, Morris Knolls
The Rams victory against Morris Hills was an important turning point for the team. Junior point guard Tristan Durkin led the way with 17 points to secure the victory, 46-38.
The Rams also saw an important win against their rival, Morris Knolls. Warner’s lethal three-point shooting, including six made from deep, propelled the Rams to their first conference win, defeating the Golden Eagles 68-53.
“We’ve had real flashes of our team’s full potential with shooting and defensive intensity,” senior Darren Laqui said. “The atmosphere in the locker room feels like we can hang with some of the best in the county. A lot of guys have been forced into tough spots and stepped up, with plenty done by unexpected guys.”
Despite recent struggles, the Rams have seen bright spots in several players. Durkin, Warner and senior caption Philip Zamloot lead the scoreboard, with senior forwards Jack Smith and Laqui close behind.
The Randolph Rams aim to add to their wins when they play Delbarton next, in the MCT, First Round, on Thursday, Feb. 6.
