The Randolph Boys Ice Hockey team proved itself to be at the top of the Mennen Division, beating Kinnelon/Jefferson/Sparta (KJS) 10-3 on Sunday, Jan. 26.
“Staying focused and composed during a tough game like tonight is crucial,” senior assistant captain Ryan Potanovich said. “The team stays calm by reassuring each other after a tough play and everyone taking accountability for mistakes.”
The game started off close, with RHS junior Vincent Crisafulli getting the first goal with assists by senior Andrew George and junior Keegan Melly.
KJS quickly responded with its first goal, tying the game 1-1. The first period was intense, with no more scoring, ending in a tie.
“It is important we keep our heads up and stick to our strengths, as we know that the only thing that can beat us is ourselves,” said senior Jacob Campbell, as the team regrouped for the second period.
Junior Ryan Thomas started off the second period with a goal, assisted by Campbell, making the score 2-1.
The Rams then went on to score four unanswered goals by the end of the second period: junior Shane Melly with one, Campbell with two and junior Andrew Parisi with one. This put the Rams in the lead going into the third period, 6-1.
“I like to take a deep breath every once in a while and make sure I can keep myself in the game,” said Potanovich, who led the defense and held KJS the entire game.
The Rams saw an exciting last period, dominating with goals all around. Senior Andrew George and Crisafulli had back-to-back goals, followed by another from Parisi and assisted by senior Isaac Stock. Their last point went to senior captain Jase Zangara with an assist from Campbell.
During the last few minutes, KJS geared up and scored two more goals, but it was not enough to come back. This ended the game, with a final score of 10-3.
“We can improve by making sure we stay out of the penalty box and being sure to capitalize on every opportunity we are given by power plays,” Potanovich said.
