Boys and Girls Swim honored their six senior team members during their most recent dual meet on Jan. 16 against Roxbury. The girls took the win 108-59, and the boys faced a close finish but fell 85-83 to the opponents.
It was a night to remember for the honored seniors, Ana Saguillo Leppanen, Livia Fontes, Kisa Mulondo, Michael Diaz, Matt Shortino and Jaidev Paulraj. The team celebrated the seniors for their leadership during their four years in the program.
“I’ve always loved our last meets of every season when coach Krystal would jump in the pool with us,” said Mulondo, explaining her favorite memory from being on the team.
The girls meet started out with a win in the 200 medleys, from the all-sister relay team of Ana Saguillo Leppanen, sophomore Alba Saguillo Leppanen and juniors Alivia Wright and Sydney Wright.
In the 200 free, the team looked dominant with a win from S. Wright going 2:02.26. Diaz came in a close second place with a time of 1:58.84 for the boys.
“I hope we continue to bond and make our connections stronger, which will help us advance into state sectionals,” said Ana Saguillo Leppanen.
The meet continued to look promising for the girls as they saw wins from freshman Julianna Young in the 200 IM, K. Mulondo and Fontes going second and third in the 50 free and A. Wright receiving first in the 100 fly.
The boys saw rewarding wins from Shortino in the 50 free, with a time of 24.17 and junior Marco Holder right behind him, placing second with a time of 24.72. Shortino accomplished another victory in the 100 fly, and Diaz took the win for the 100 free.
“The environment was loud, with everyone excited to swim and support the seniors,” S. Wright said.
The girls proved they are on top with wins in the 200 free relay from Young, freshman Emily Dalton, freshman Ashley McDonnell and S. Wright. They also celebrated wins from Ana Saguillo Leppanen in the 100 breast. The girls also took home the win in the 400 free relay.
However, for the boys it came down to the very last event, leaving them determined to take home the win. With the score close, sophomore Gavin Drazek got second in the 100 back and TJ Wangchuk and James Ward earned second and third in the 100 breast. During the final event remaining, the 400 free relay team of Diaz, Holder, Drazek and Shortino placed second, which unfortunately was not enough to secure those final points for victory.
Come and support the Boys Swim in their next meet today at 2:30 against Delbarton.
