Boys Ice Hockey dominated Morristown on Saturday, Jan. 11, with a final score of 6-2. The Rams have earned a promising mid-season record of 8-3 since the win.
At the game against Morristown, the first period was a back-an-forth battle, ending with no numbers on the board from either team. The Rams team looked in sync, with freshman goalie Zack Levesque blocking all shots Morristown took. However, the competition looked even, making it hard to score.
“I try to motivate the team and also play calm and smart in time of need,” senior captain Jase Zangara said.
During the second period, both teams stepped up to the challenge. Morristown broke the ice first, getting the first goal of the game. The Rams quickly followed, however, with junior Shane Melly getting the first goal, with an assist from Zangara and junior Vincent Crisafulli.
“Communication is key on the ice,” Crisafulli said. “In transitions everyone is trying to make a play, which is great for getting pucks to the net.”
At the end of the second period, Morristown got another goal, giving them a 2-1 lead going into the third.
“After a goal goes in, I go over my performance and try to move on with a positive mindset,” goalie Levesque said.
The third period started out slow for Randolph, as the Rams just couldn’t get another goal despite multiple attempts.
With five minutes remaining on a power play, Melly got his second goal of the night with an assist from senior Andrew George and Crisafulli. This put Randolph back in the game, tying the score at 2-2.
Just 40 seconds later, Zangara scored another power goal, with an assist from senior Jacob Campbell, putting the Rams in the lead.
Just minutes after, Randolph’s momentum carried through, resulting in a third goal for Melly, earning him an impressive hat trick for the night. George rallied into a shorthanded goal minutes after with another assist from Crisafulli.
With 30 seconds remaining, Zangara hustled down the ice, scoring the final goal of the night, helping the Rams secure the win at 6-2.
“Our goal is to win a state championship,” Zangara said. “We fell short last year, and we use that to motivate us this year.”
