The Randolph boys are ready for the start of the winter track and field season, with their first meet set for today, Wednesday, Dec. 11, at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, New York.
“We are all training hard, preparing well and have the courage to accept the challenge on the track,” senior Daniel Albecker said.
The winter season features a variety of events, including multiple relays, sprints, throws, field events and distance races. Last year, Randolph excelled in relay events such as the distance medley relay, sprint medley relay, 4×800, 4×400 and 4×200, as well as several individual events.
Last season, Randolph placed seventh at the Morris County Relay Championships, eighth at the Morris County Championships, and fifth at the North 1, Group 3 sectional championships. Head coach Luke Suttile believes the team has the potential to improve on those results this year.
“The goal is always to win county relays, but also to win individual championships such as counties and sectionals,” Suttile said.
The team lost key senior runners to graduation last June, including Daniel Byrne, Colin O’Meara and James Bartl. However, a strong core of returning varsity athletes is expected to lead the way this season.
Key distance runners include seniors Preston Gumann and Thomas Amato along with junior Kennan Byers. Top sprinters returning this season include Albecker, Asher Adeghe, Deahan Jo and Christian Velasco. Andy Krauss and Justin Swayze return as leading throwers.
Suttile noted the team’s strong preseason preparation. “I think we’ve started better than in the past few years in terms of fitness, which is a good thing, and I feel like we have a strong group this year,” he said.
With optimism high, the Randolph Boys Winter Track and Field team looks to make its mark in Morris County and beyond.
