The RHS Orchestras participated in a beloved annual tradition, performing for senior citizens at the local community center, on Friday, Nov. 15. These performances allow the local seniors, who may not be able to attend the regular school concerts, to enjoy the students’ incredible talent at a live concert.
“Both this year and last year, this trip has served to connect students to the broader community,” Orchestra Director Aoma Caldwell said. “The other purpose of this trip is to build connections within the student community itself—not to mention it’s super fun. We would love to continue this tradition if the senior citizens will have us.”
The RHS String Orchestra opened the event with pieces ranging from classical works like Mozart’s “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik,” “Hanukkah Habanera” and Grieg’s “Peer Gynt Suite” to modern songs like “You’ll Be in My Heart” from Tarzan and selections from “A Charlie Brown Christmas.”
“It was a really fun experience getting to play for the seniors, and there are some good parts in the music that are challenging but fun to play,” sophomore bassist Caroline Crane said.
Following the string orchestra, the RHS Chamber Orchestra wowed the audience with an eclectic range of music from classic works like “The Rite of Spring” and “Danse Macabre” to songs from films like “Mission Impossible” and “La La Land.” Iconic favorites like “When You Wish Upon a Star” “Greensleeves” and even theme music from Wii games were also on the playlist.
After the performance, the orchestra members headed to Circle Lanes for some well-deserved fun, enjoying activities such as bowling and laser tag. “It was a nice opportunity to have fun with my friends outside of school,” sophomore violinist Alexa Rosenbaum said.
