As fall sports come to an end and winter sports set in, Girls Ice Hockey is heating up for what promises to be an exciting 2024-2025 season. With sticks taped, skates sharpened and plenty of energy on the ice, this year’s skaters are a mix of veterans and fresh talent, all of whom are ready to make a strong push on the ice
“Our goal is to keep the energy and vibes of the season high,” senior co-captain Jaclyn Mars said. “I believe since my teammates and I were close off the ice, our chemistry on the ice will be unstoppable.”
Though last season was a tough one for the skaters, ending with a 2-16 record, it did not reflect their effort or potential. While the team lost some key Class of ’24 graduates, a new core of talented players has stepped up to fill the void.
Returners include seniors Mars, Yolanda Sabillon, Olivia Olechowski and Caroline Coe; juniorsAmelia Kolbik, Ava Shadwell, Daniella Gizienski, Lily Zepp and Brooke Rodell; and sophomores Lia Carroll and Allison Villarevia.
The team will face many of the same schools as last year including Madison, Kent Place, Cranford, Chatham, Princeton, Trinity Hall and Summit. This year, however, the team is determined to turn last year’s record around with a new head coach, Scott Aiello, alongside captains Olechowski, Sabillon and Mars.
The Rams have prepared for this upcoming season by having captains’ practices and forging strong team bonds. “The practices enable us to get in shape and ready to play, and the bonds positively impact the team’s chemistry,” Olechowski said.
The girls are fortunate to have a well-rounded roster of captains this season. All skaters, both returners and newcomers, have shown leadership and kindness, both on and off the ice. “I will remind every player of their purpose on the team and reinforce encouragement when they need it,” Sabillon said.
The Girls Ice Hockey team kicks off their season against Madison on Dec. 5 at Mennen Arena.
