Boys Varsity Soccer won the state sectional championship with a thrilling 1-0 victory over Ramapo on Saturday, Nov. 16.
The Rams started strong in the first half, showcasing energy and precision with their passing as they pressed for an early advantage. Ramapo matched their intensity, resulting in a thrilling back-and-forth battle for possession.
“Yesterday was definitely a battle, and we walked into the game knowing that,” senior co-captain Jayden DeCarvalho said.
Both teams were determined to emerge victorious, keeping the match competitive and the stakes high.
With 12 minutes remaining in the first half, senior David Martinez kicked the ball into the box, where sophomore Andrei Niculescu headed it into the net to give Randolph the lead.
The Rams ended the first half up 1-0, having poured their energy into the opening 40 minutes.
As the second half began, the Rams returned to the field with renewed vigor, determined to hold their lead. The team created multiple scoring opportunities, with play transitioning fluidly from defense to the strikers.
Senior Jack Lachanski electrified the crowd with an extraordinary run, dribbling the ball from the backline through Ramapo’s defense, leaving opposing players scrambling.
However, Ramapo refused to back down, relentlessly pushing forward and firing several dangerous shots at the goal. Despite this, junior goalie Gavin Vichengrad was a wall, making incredible saves to deny them access.
“We were well-prepared and came into the game knowing what to expect when playing against Ramapo,” Vichengrad said. His quick reflexes and composure under pressure helped preserve Randolph’s lead.
The game ended with a Rams victory and an eruption of celebration. Students stormed the field, embracing each other and celebrating their hard-earned win.
Niculescu described the moment as surreal, saying, “It felt like a dream.”
With the sectional title secured, the Rams face Rahway next, in the semifinal round of the NJSIAA Group Tournament, today, Tuesday, Nov. 19.
