Randolph Boys Soccer defeated Roxbury 1-0 in a hard-fought match on DaSilva Field on Halloween, Thursday, Oct. 31.
Randolph started strong, controlling most of the game and suffocating Roxbury’s attack. “Coming into the game we were all confident in ourselves and our ability,” senior David Martinez said. “We knew we needed to come out strong if we wanted to win.”
Randolph dominated possession and created several scoring opportunities. One chance came from senior co-captain Bryan Garcia, whose shot hit the post and rebounded to sophomore Andrei Nitulescu, who just missed wide right.
The Rams did a good job defending Roxbury’s attackers and the game was scoreless at halftime.
During halftime, the Randolph Boys Freshman Team was honored for winning the Morris Country Tournament (MCT) on Oct. 27. In addition, it was the first-ever Rams Night with the boosters sponsoring trick-or-treating in the stands, a selfie station, and discounted snacks at the snack bar.
Randolph burst out in the second half determined to maintain the pressure. The Rams created numerous chances early in the half and were hungry to find the winning goal, forcing Roxbury’s goalkeeper to make several big saves.
In minute 75 of the game, a corner was awarded to the Rams. Junior co-captain RJ Dougherty crossed the ball to the back post, where Nitulescu headed it in to give Randolph the breakthrough and make it 1-0.
Randolph stayed strong defensively, and despite Roxbury’s aggressive play, the Gaels ultimately could not find the back of the Rams’ net.
“I think everyone worked very hard, so it was a great feeling to get the well-deserved win for my team,” Nitulescu said after the game.
The game ended with a final score of 1-0, giving Randolph 11 wins for the season.
“I would say we dominated the entire game and held the ball well,” senior co-captain Jayden DeCarvalho said. “I think we could have finished a couple more chances, but it was a good win.”
Randolph plays Paramus next, in the first round of the NJSIAA Tournament, today, Tuesday, Nov. 5.
