Every spring, prom-goers flock to stores like Coco’s in Mine Hill and Jacqueline’s Dream Dresses in Livingston to find the perfect dress that is both stylish and trendy. Throughout the years, prom dress trends have shifted dramatically from modest and simple to bold and blingy. This year’s trends include dresses in royal blue, open backs and sparkles. Here is a look at some of the RHS junior prom dress trends for spring 2023.

Royal Blue

One common trend that will be showcased at prom is the color blue, as shown in the RHS junior prom dresses color trend chart below. Whether it be royal or baby, nearly 50 percent of junior prom-goers chose some shade of blue to wear. “It’s my favorite color, and I feel that it complements my skin tone,” junior Lia Carroll said. “Blue also brings out my eye color, and I feel as though the color looks good on everyone.”

Open Backs

Cross backs and open backs are other elegant options that the majority junior prom attendees have chosen to wear. The open back look has become a staple for adding a nice silhouette to the back of the dress. “The open back dress I chose is a stylish and trendy piece,” junior Mackenzie Kreitzer said. “It caught my eye the second I saw it in the store, as the back was not only open but had a bow.”

One of a Kind Dresses

Some students had ideas of their own and chose to stand out among the crowd. One junior in particular, Mel Gonzalez, started a color trend of her own, choosing gold over the more popular colors. “Originally when looking for a dress, I had no intention of going gold,” she said. “But when trying it on, the gold glow on that dress gave me an indescribable feeling of confidence and good spirit. Being able to shine in something I felt beautiful in on a special night was important to me, and the gold dress gave me exactly that.”

Sparkles

Sparkles are a staple of prom every year, whether they be in the form of glitter or small gemstones. This year the trend was split between dresses that are completely embellished with sparkles to dresses that feature some sort of sparkly design. Junior Maria LaPietra, who bought a bedazzled red dress, said, “I love my dress because the sparkles add something extra to it and look so pretty in any kind of light.”

Popular Prom Dress Stores

Among the most popular prom dress stores are Coco’s in Mine Hill and Jacqueline’s Dream Dresses in Livingston. However, other prom-goers opted to buy their dresses online, at stores such as Lucy in the Sky and Lulu’s, as great affordable options.  “I love my dress from Lucy in the Sky,” junior Abby Lindsey said. “I was lucky because I ordered a gorgeous purple dress, and it fit me perfectly the first time. I know lots of people buying online and getting used dresses from other girls in Randolph.”
