Cannolis, pierogies and latkes were just a few of the delicious dishes that NSSHS students whipped up to share at the Winter Gathering, hosted in the cooking room on Friday, Dec. 16.

The pre-break gathering was designed to help educate members about the different cultures of their peers. Students were required to make a dish that represented their culture. They had to document the process of their creation as well through photos and recipe cards, so they would be able to share the recipes with their peers.

“This is the first time NSSHS has held a gathering like this,” said Jenifer Corley, the society advisor who teaches history at the high school. “Our president, Alex Vega, wanted to do a ‘Friendsgiving’ event, and we thought of the idea of celebrating and sharing our families’ cultural traditions before the holiday break.”

The event was originally supposed to take place on Thursday, Dec.15, after school in the Commons, but it was rescheduled due to snow. To make the rescheduled event more convenient, board members decided to host it in the cooking room during lunch, not wanting members’ delicious creations to go to waste.

Besides the aforementioned cannolis, pierogies and latkes, other delectable dishes included shepherd’s pie, pizzelles, penne vodka and zeppole.

“I enjoyed trying all the new foods that I would not have otherwise,” junior Samantha Einfeldt said. “It was a good chance to explore other cultures via food and learn more about my peers.”

The potluck-style event was a great way for students to bond while enjoying food from other people’s cultures.

“I would definitely love to do this again,” Einfeldt said, echoing the feeling of other Society members who hoped to make Winter Gathering an annual event.
